The coup here for Microsoft is not that they have secured a deal with Twitter and Facebook but that they have gotten it to press first. First counts for quite a bit in advertising, and evidently in operating systems as well, yet the internet seems to favor the "latest" ever so slightly over the "first" and only a hair less than the "best".
So while Bing is new and bing has the latest deal with these giants of social networking, it seems clear that it has not and will not soon eclipse Googles hold on the fine art of searching. In fact, the entire issue of whether or not MS has gotten one over on the competition is beside the point. The winners here are Twitter and Facebook, hands down, the amount of free press that they are recieving is priceless. Couple that with their names popping up in search results for the forseable future every time a results set is conjured up and you have to have some pretty happy heads of marketing in Palo Alto and San Fransisco.
One thing in the article does hint at is the potential for Microsoft to profit from this deal on both ends. Having made an extremely modest ($240M) investment into Facebook before any of their competition managed to any exposure that FB gets through Bing, or Google, means more $$ in the pocket of the Hydra of the personal computing world.
While this news does not seem to be rocking the foundations of online society it does imply that juggling tweet, blog and website is going to become even more vital as having an active microbloggin presence will now equate to even greater exposure through search results. So, the message of the day? Make some [more] noise!! ...and embed your tweet-stream on your site somewhere.
