I used Google for my research. According to Wikipedia "Search Engine Optimization" (SEO)is the process of improving the volume of quality of traffic to a website from search engines via"natural" or "organic" search results as opposed to search engine marketing (SEM) which deals with paid inclusion. This is free publicity if you will. This tracks and promotes the traffic of your website. As an website designer it is important for when you code that you put as many keywords in the coding as possible.
Strategies for promoting your website on social networking sites and bookmarking sites is to build an audience. According to the article The Web Marketing Checklist: 37 Ways to Promote Your Website. the best way is to be keyword rich when it comes to coding. Have keywords attached to images, hyperlinks, site maps, promote on social networking site such as Facebook by having your website as a link, and bookmarking sites. On the blog of Website Traffic Series Part 16: Promoting Your Content on Social Networking Sites gives insight on how you can further promote after your have launched your site. I think that the first article is the most effective, because it is tracked and doesn't really rely on you personally asking visitors to visit your site.
I would really know where to begin with trying to promote a website that I designed or try to help the person I created it for but both articles gave me insight on where to try to begin.
