Microsofts deal with Twitter and Facebook

While reading this article I had mixed feelings about whether this is a benificial thing or not and for who. For one, its a great oppertunity for facebook and twitter. It would mean their sites pop up when a status is searched and they are making deals with a lot of money. $240 million is a lot of money that obviously facebook isnto going to turn down.
However, for users this may not sit well with some. Although you can change privacy settings there will be nothing that lets users know that their statuses and twitter updates can be searched. The majority of the population that is on Twitter and Facebook are not reading articles like the one we just read. Therefore they will not know that they should change their settings so that everything isnt searchable. That is a lot of privacy invading and I feel would cause a lot of trouble. I believe the only users that may find this beneficial is maybe celebrities or organizations or companies that are on facebook and twitter. However for the everyday user I dont think it will be beneficial.
In terms of google and I dont think it will effect it that much except for people who are really interested in looking up statuses. Though I think in general as i stated before only important people such as celebrities or companies will probably be searched. Though this would being in thousands of fans I think over all it wont make much difference. I dont think this will effect how Id design my own website at all. Unless my website was a social networking site or a search engine.

  1. I agree that the only users of Facebook and Twitter that will find this new feature beneficial are celebrities and businesses who want their statuses to be seen by all. For the average user, this update, despite the fact that you can change your privacy settings, will be seen as an annoyance and possible breach of privacy. Facebook and Twitter must have something in mind that will increase their popularity and revenue flow that enticed them enough to make this deal.
