Web Stalker 2.0

As if it wasn't bad enough that one's facebook status is shown to every "friend" they have, now it could be on search engines? I can deal with people I know seeing my statuses and whatnot, but for any old Joe Schmoe to know my current status by searching my name? I can't say that I am a fan of the idea. Personal rant aside, I should give my thoughts on the questions posed in the email.

I think it may have a slight impact on Google's market share at first, but the article said that both Facebook and Twitter have been talking to Google too, so once Google gets it up and running I don't see much further impact. As for benefitting Twitter and Facebook, this would definitely give them a lot more visibility, as people's tweets and status updates may pop up during typical searches, but I can't really see them gaining a lot out of this. I don't really see how this would impact my future ventures into web design. Perhaps I may have to find better ways to rank higher in the search engines.

This whole thing to me just seems like a "Hey, look what we can do!" adaptation of technology, at the compromise of people's privacy. I can't say that I see any real benefits to it, but I suppose I'll have to see this in action in order to know the impact of it.

  1. Hmmm the privacy issue you bring up does concern me... Even though facebook offers a filter in preferences to state whether or not you would like to allow your pictures, statuses, etc to be available to an audience outside of facebook, many people do not even know about such filter or know that their information could feasibly used in a variety of ways.

Furthermore I agree with you as to not really understanding how this could impact my future methods as a web designer. Maybe there's some really obvious impact that I'm not seeing because I know fairly little about implications, but I kind of doubt this would have any considerable impact.

  2. The privacy issue I think will rub a lot of people the wrong way because most people set their profiles private and now that this puts statuses available for anyone to see privacy will become a concern for users

I also agree that this is not really that significant of a acquisition for Google. I think that it would catch some people's attention for a little while then eventually fade off to an unused service.

  3. Like I said before, yea the privacy issue is a major concern. It sounds a lot like web stalking someone by following their statuses.
Google should not follow this trend because it is an unnecessary service for users.

  4. I agree, being able to search up someone's status on google is a little unsettling. Having strangers read what you are up to at any time of the day is like you said, web stalking.
I also agree with you on the impact it has on web design. I don't see much coming out of it.
