CNN: far cry from the old site!!

Pretty neat, better use of screen size, I feel like the old screen may have only used about a 741px. width of the original screen. However, the new site seems to cover atleast 990px. Whats seems to make a big standout over the old site is that there are 2 upfront news stories, showcase stories which are this time running horizontally rathers than vertically like the old site. Yet, a downfall is the last square which could be used as another showcase story as an ad..lol.
Noticed far more videos than the old site, although I am not too fond of watching news videos some people are. I would have gone with just a few. I like the most popular news bargraph, on other news sites I usually read what is listed as the most popular so this is something that would interest me.
Farther on down the page seems to be a little more indexed and has what the old page had at the top. I feel like CNN did it better this time by putting the majority of the "catchy" web designing at the top, makes for a more interesting, attention-getting feel.

  1. While I didn't find the old site to be horrible, I do find that they utilize the user's monitor better horizontally-wise. Yeah, it's too bad they used that third box as an ad when they have enough space for skyscraper ads on the sides. Even though the new site focuses more on video, CNN didn't take away any of their written content. That's primarily what they feed on as plenty of people are still likely to read their articles. This just gives people more options on how they wish to view news and may appeal to some younger crowds.

  2. It is interesting how you noticed the adjustment to the screen width. I also like how they set up the new site to highlight two big news stories horizontally at the top of the page. I think it's weird that they did not make the third square a video. The ad just looks out of place.

  3. Right on with this post, I didn't even realize the width of the screen change either. It makes the homepage more spacious and the boxes seem to be more proportional. Nice post!

  4. I think their use of video is about the same, the new cnn just showcases it differently. Before every story linked to a video or multimedia commponent. Now they atleast showcase one of the stories, but all the other's are still a click away.

  5. I guess that might be why the video seems different here on the new one, because it is showcased differently. About the screensize...that is main thing I noticed when I first loaded the new page

  6. That ad, while it may appear out of place to you, is probably making CNN a ton of money because of its prime placement. People might also accidentally be clicking on it because of its confusing proximity to the main stories..lol
