It seems to me that websites have gotten big enough. While better technology, higher resolution, faster download speeds, etc. have made it possible for us to do more with websites, I think that we've hit a happy medium for a good site. with these advances, it's possible for companies to do a good job presenting themselves in a stylish (and sometimes entertaining) way on the internet. Videos, pictures and sounds can add a nice touch to a site without bogging it down.
There is such a thing as too much. I can't speak for anyone else, but when I see a website with a ton of stuff on it I get a bit lost. A website that is overdone turns into an eye-sore that becomes difficult to navigate or gather information from. Just because you have a bigger monitor or better resolution doesn't mean you have to put more stuff on your site. The extra stuff could work against you by confusing the viewer or diluting the content, message, or purpose of your site.
Remember, just because it's possible doesn't mean it's a good idea.

You are right on. The concept "Keep it simple, stupid" applies here. There is a general structure and layout to websites that makes them effective. Straying away from that makes users unhappy. Until technology comes up with a better way to put together a site, we've developed some standards.
ReplyDeleteSome people try to do too much with their site; adding too much content and getting away from the purpose of the site.
Having too much information on a web site that distracts the user from the main point is just an example of a bad web design. A web site could have tons of information and still be very well-structured and easy to use(www.cnn.com for example). The problem is not the amount of content you want to put on a web page but the way you organize and present it to a user.
ReplyDeleteI agree completely. Too much content could weigh negatively on the usuablity of the website. A less is more approach to creating a website should be the way to go as far as I am concerned. Good Post!!
ReplyDeleteThis post makes me question whether or not significant expansion is even necessary... Yea, websites could expand infinitely, but do they really need to? There is only so much information one organization can offer, and most of it can be ciphered into the nav bar or the left and right side columns. Too much of a good thing CAN be bad.
ReplyDeleteI do agree with this post in that some things just do not need up-scaling. Enhancing a website and improving its functionality is always a topic of much discussion. Judging by the success of websites at this current point in time, I feel that the web can be extremely user friendly. If things are to be made more and more complicated, the ease of access and "user-friendlyness" of its features will surely hinder less savvy web viewers.
