I don't believe that the size of screens will continue to grow. Yes, bigger screen are available for desktop computers, but how many people are spending good money on desktops. The trend I see is smaller is better. This doesn't just mean people viewing web on cell phones, but laptops are everywhere. People look for a laptop that weighs the least that can be carried everywhere easily.
I think it is more important that a website looks good on a smaller sized screen. "White space" on a website has become a common place. Unlike the old fashion magazine or newspaper where "white space" meant less money, on the web it adds simplicity. It's more important to have a website that is simple with good organization.

Smaller is better in a sense, reason being is that we can have websites at the tip of our fingers if we want, when we want and where we want. This becomes more valuable when we cant get to a desktop or laptop during for some odd reason. For example, this AM the power was out in my area, meaning I could not get wireless on my laptop because my router is electric (duh). Yet, I had my blackberry readily available to hook to the net. Making me realize that the way I communicate nowdays is more through my phone than by any other means..lol. So, I agree with you about the value of Smaller is Better!!
ReplyDeleteYay white space and simplicity! This is what web design should be about, especially on smaller screens. I don't know if smaller is BETTER, but it's certainly the trend.

ReplyDeleteMaybe individual people aren't buying desktops but certainly schools, corporations, libraries, and other public places are. Also, smaller websites means that it take more clicks to get to your final destination as you have to navigate through more pages. However, I do agree that white space, in moderation, can be a good thing especially to scale-down the site.
ReplyDeleteI didn't even consider mobile technology until I read your post. Also, as a graphic design student, I agree with your discussion of white space. It's necessary in order to have a good, clean design.
ReplyDeleteWow. Yeah I never looked at it that way. Nice analogy. This should definitely be the case.
ReplyDeleteNice idea, and true, even businesses use laptops of pda's that do not accommodate all of the "junk" that is on a webpage. So not many people need the bigger screens and websites do not need to grow.
ReplyDeleteBasically everyone is saying you're a genius. High five.
ReplyDeleteYa this was a good post. My father has an older laptop for work that is big. All of his coworkers use a smaller version that is new. Because of the amount that he travels and takes it around, he would much rather bring a small laptop. As others have said, the mentioning of the mobile devices was something that I had not even noticed before.
