Google

Google has made such a huge impact in today's web culture that it's unmeasurable! Nowadays you rarely hear people say let's Yahoo! it, instead you say Google it. Google is such an easy application to use and it has everything you need - web, images, videos, books... No other search engines have books, yes granted that you cannot look at every page of the book but you can see most of it! Other than Google, who does that? Everything is for free, even looking at nearly every page of many books and you dont even need to register!

I believe that in the future Google will incorporate more day-to-day basic need applications such as a Google Operating System. I mean right now they have the Chrome, Android for phone, they are currently making some sort of e-reader by early 2010! So Yes, i believe a Google Operating System is next in line. With this said, I do not think that Google has created a monopoly, Microsoft who is an enemy to Google made a bing.com which i believe is a weak attempt to fight against Google search. Gmail is a great application, it just cannot compete with hotmail/Yahoo mail. Simply because no one can match Google doesnt mean that they have created a Monopoly because companies like Microsoft are simply not smart enough to think like users and make useful products that doesnt require the company to admit failure (Windows Vista..).

  1. I agree that Google's impact is unmeasurable. It seems like its potential is endless because their formula can be applied to almost any industry. I think that they are on their way to actually developing these day-to-day applications. The idea has been past around that your browser will become your operating system.

  2. I would disagree with the statement that Gmail cannot compete with hotmail or Yahoo mail. The Gmail front-end is very user friendly, the ability to chat with your contacts eliminates the need for a separate IM program, and the user can seemlessly move between their mail, a useful calendar program, their blog account, and more. Also, google is adding (has added?) video chatting to their service.

Who can compete with all that?

  3. If past events are any indication to predict the future, then what a better way than to look at Microsoft. Similar to Google, nobody expected Microsoft to be giant that is today, nevertheless the technical and legal wizards working for Bill Gates made it a reality, but with a vengeance. Microsoft has a monopoly of an inferior product, as a proof of evidence just compare Mac with all the security issues and vulnerabilities that Windows have, but of course computers running Windows are more cheaper than those running with Mac. When I read the part in your blog in which you state: “So Yes, i believe a Google Operating System is next in line. With this said, I do not think that Google has created a monopoly,” That was a contradiction, if Bill Gates can make a monopoly with an inferior product then, what Google is supposed to do with a good one? Let’s face it, all this other areas in which they are competing with other companies to win over their customers is for one reason: to have a monopoly, by using the size of the company that they are and the financial backing that they have, they are well on their way to do it, Isn’t just that obvious?
