I saw something on television some time ago about Google. They did a survey about which search engine most people used. They went around asking people to look up something on the internet and most people would go to google.com. There was even one person who went to google.com even though the homepage was yahoo.com. I think the impact that Google has made in today's web culture is pretty big because instead of saying look it up, people these days say Google it. Google basically has everything that you might need: the news, e-mail, images, maps, video.
I think Google will grow even bigger than now in the future. They will probably come up with more things to show to the public in the future. I think Google has created a monopoly because in 2008, Google had "about 69.5 percent of Internet searches in the U.S...increasing 8 percent over 2007" (cnet.com). Google's YouTube also monopolizes online video content. Just last month, 39.6% of people watched videos on YouTube while the other competitors had less the 3% of the overall viewers.

I dont agree that Google has created a monopoly. Granted that 69.5% of internet seraches uses Google search doesnt mean that Google created a monopoly. Its just that other search engines arent as good as they are.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that Google has become a monopoly either. The definition of a monopoly is control over a market that makes it possible for manipulation. Since there are other search engines out there Google is not a monopoly its just the forefront leader by a long shot.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't say that Google is a monopoly, but I'd definitely say that Google is becoming a standard for the way things get done on the internet. The majority of people's homepages these days are either google.com or a website containing a google powered search bar. They will never be able to monopolize because of exaclty what JacksonB said: they do not control the market, therefore making it impossible for manipulation.
ReplyDeleteGoogle might monopolize web traffic but I wouldn't consider them a monopoly, google is simply providing something better than the rest. A monopoly would attempt to keep the competition down but google welcomes challenges.
