Turning the page

While it seems that sites have had to increase in size to accommodate the growth of monitors and their capabilities, I think this trend might actually be slowing down. Desktop computers are slowly becoming a thing of the past as far as web browsing is concerned; it's all about laptops, netbooks, and mobile devices all of a sudden.

This change in computer culture will probably see smaller websites, as portability becomes a larger concern as wireless internet becomes more widely available. While many people can access the Internet from more and more places, they will be using their gigantic desktops for this purpose less and less, I theorize.

Websites that are 1600 pixels wide are not practical in this new culture, no matter what our computers and monitors are capable of displaying. Less is more, in this case.

  1. Well put. I agree that web designers need to focus on mobile computing.
Yes, 1600 pixel wide websites would be a problem. I do feel however that 800 pixels wide is outdated, and that 1024 pixels wouldn't be a problem for any modern laptop computer.

  2. Yes, more people are using laptops and mobile devices. But laptops usually use a larger resolution. I agree with Ben that a 1024 pixel sized website would be best for all devices. And I agree with Adam that 1600 pixels would be not practical. :)
